Colter Wall has announced the release of a new album, entitled Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs, and shared the lead single, “Western Swing & Waltzes”. The album marks the third full-length release for the 24 year-old rising folk-country singer-songwriter.
The 10-track album, which Wall produced himself, is due out on August 28th via La Honda Records/Thirty Tigers. After watching Dave Cobb produce his previous album, 2018’s Songs of the Plains, Wall took in what it meant to put together a record. He then wrangled up his band and went into Yellow Dog Studios, deep in the heart of Texas, to record this new batch of songs that still remain true to his preservationist views of the Golden Age of country music.
On “Western Swing & Waltzes”, Wall comes in with his trademark baritone that makes a listener question how somebody who could still be on his parent’s insurance can have the gravel in his voice like an old Waylon Jennings. Wall is joined on this track, along with many on the album, by his band consisting of Patrick Lyons (pedal steel, dobro, mandolin), Jake Groves (harmonica), Jason Simpson (bass), and Aaron Goodrich (drums). While Wall’s music does often simply feature his solitary voice and acoustic guitar, “Western Swing & Waltzes”, much like the album, shows that Wall isn’t as confined to the past as one might assume about a man still singing cowboy songs in 2020. In a way, Wall’s lasting affinity for the North American West is a gentle reminder of some of the important things left behind in the march of progress. Of Wester Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs, Wall simply said, “These songs are punchier than I am.”
