Funk guitarist Cory Wong has shared a new video for “Today I’m Gonna Get Myself A Real Job”, one of the tracks included on his recent solo album, Motivational Music For The Syncopated Soul.

Wong’s new video depicts a world where Cory is tired of traveling, writing, and performing music, and envisions a new life working a “real job”. The track focuses on self-doubt in creative pursuits, something that most people can relate to. The new “Today I’m Gonna Get Myself A Real Job” video follows up the previously released videos for “Starting Line” featuring Emily Browning, and “St. Paul”and “Home”, which feature Wong alongside pianist Jon Batiste, drummer Nate Smith, and others.

Cory Wong shared his thoughts on the new video via press release. He explained,

There’s the thought of…maybe this isn’t the right thing to do, and I should get a “real job”…only to realize, what’s a “real job” anyway? There’s a certain mountain that we as artists need to climb to realize and fight our way over to discover that if this really is our true calling, and really what we are meant to do…then we need to just do it. I’ve known since I was twelve years old that I was meant to be a musician. I had the passion. I had the drive. I knew that I might not ever be the best guitar player out there, and I know that right now I’m not the best guitar player in the world….but I’m the best ME out there. And my biggest realization as an artist is that there’s no room for competition or ego against other people if you’re just trying to be the best YOU. Once I started to discover my own voice and sound as an artist, there was so much baggage and ego that was left to die on the other side of the hill. I figured since this was such a personal story and message, that it was a valid song for me to make my singing debut on record. Now I may not be the best, but I know that I can rest knowing today that I don’t ever need a “real job.”

I grew up as an MTV and VH1 kid. I watched music videos for hours on end. Fortunately, I grew up in the golden era of music videos, but never made my own. Normally I get footage of the live tracking sessions; but for this song, we didn’t. So I got to live out my MTV dreams by making a music video for it! The song has a lighthearted approach to an endless struggle as an artist who has self-doubt. It was fun to capture the feeling of the song, but also the magic of living out your calling.
