As if Courtney Barnett wasn’t honest enough in her lyricism, the singer-songwriter has released a trailer for the new documentary, Anonymous Club. Due for theatrical release in 2022, the film intimately chronicles a three-year period in the deadpan rocker’s meteoric rise to fame.

Shot on 16mm film and supplemented with narration from Barnett’s personal audio diary, Anonymous Club captures Barnett on a world tour in support of her 2018 album, Tell Me How You Really Feel. The film is as unguarded as Barnett’s music itself, displaying the highs and lows of her poetic soul as she navigates the added pressures of stardom on top of the grueling task of just getting by.

“I wake up having one of those just feeling sad days, and I think sometimes it’s okay to just feel sad and keep on doing what you’re doing,” Barnett says in the film’s trailer.

The trailer comes in the wake of Barnett’s third LP, Things Take Time, Take Time, released last week. The two projects see a certain juxtaposition, as the latest album finds Courtney implementing positive mental health practices to avoid some of the darker emotions that defined her earlier catalog. Barnett went so far as to name one of her singles, “Write A List of Things To Look Forward To”, after one of those positive practices.

“I know it’s not completely bad because I’m looking forward to the next day,” Barnett says. “You know I have hope for the next day. To fix whatever was wrong the day before.”

On Monday, Barnett stopped by Ellen to perform “Write A List of Things To Look Forward To” in-studio. Watch that performance, as well as the trailer for the forthcoming Courtney Barnett documentary, Anonymous Club, below. Keep an eye on the film’s website for release details to come.

Barnett is preparing to kick off a North American tour on November 27th in Pioneertown, CA. For tickets and a full list of tour dates click here.
