Late last year, we reported that Creed frontman Scott Stapp was broke and living in a Holiday Inn, sending sketchy videos regarding the IRS freezing his accounts and royalties he had unjustly been denied. His situation continued to unfold with reports that Stapp believed he was in the CIA tasked to kill President Obama.

Now, Stapp tells People magazine that he struggles with bipolar disorder. He is in recovery for drug and alcohol abuse and says he is “lucky to be alive.”

“I had a psychotic break that was brought on by alcohol and drug abuse,” he says. “I was hallucinating. I drove around the United States for a month, following an angel that I saw on the hood of my car.”

“In my delusional thinking, I thought my family was involved in ISIS,” he continued, “and that millions of dollars had been taken from me to support terrorism. All of it was nonsense. I was out of my mind.”

Stapp recently entered a dual diagnostic facility, where he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. “It was hard to process,” he says. “There’s a stigma associated with it. But [my wife] Jaclyn kept telling me, ‘Embrace it. We love you.’ It became a big sign of relief, because finally, we had an answer.”
