Damon Albarn has shared a new single titled “The Tower of Montevideo”. Albarn’s latest release also arrived with a live performance video and serves as a preview for his forthcoming album, The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows, due out on November 12th via Transgressive Records.

Originally meant to arrive as an orchestral piece inspired by the landscapes of Iceland, the struggles of lockdown saw the Gorillaz and Blur co-founder mold his vision into an 11-track album, exploring themes of fragility, loss, emergence, and rebirth. Pushing his already-expansive sound even further, Albarn developed expansive orchestral arrangements and intimate melodies for his impressive vocal work to dance atop.

These qualities are ever-present in “The Tower of Montevideo”. Inspired by Palacio Salvo, an iconic, 100-year-old Uruguayan building, “The Tower of Montevideo” explores Albarn’s melancholic wonder at this region of South America, its architecture, culture, and landscape. It’s a place Albarn describes as “familiar and utterly otherworldly,” according to a press release.

Below, check out an audio recording of the new Damon Albarn single, “The Tower of Montevideo”, along with the live performance video, which comes as part of a new special, cinematic performance film from a series entitled Sublime Boulevards – Performance Films.

Additionally, The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows is available for pre-order now. Albarn will offer the album on a variety of platforms including vinyl, CD, and cassette. The CD version includes a 20-minute hidden track titled “Huldufólk”. Head here for more information.
