Dave Matthews Band played the first of two shows at the famed Hollywood Bowl on Monday. The band welcomed a miniature symphony orchestra as well as trombonists Alex Wasily (Dumpstaphunk) and Elizabeth Lea (Tedeschi Trucks Band) to provide accompaniment during a portion of the 19-song set.
The band opened the show with fan favorite “#41”, which gave way to “You Never Know” and “Fool In The Rain”, a Led Zeppelin cover the band debuted at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, WI back on July 2nd. The highlight of the show came when Dave put down his guitar and welcomed a string section to join the band on orchestral renditions of “Squirm”, “When The World Ends”, “Steady As We Go”, and “What You Are”.
After runs through a few more tunes including “Stay Or Leave”, a partial “Kill The Preacher”, and “Why I Am”, Dave Matthews and company invited trombonists Alex Wasily and Elizabeth Lea to sit in during “Jimi Thing”. Dave then brought up violinist Ann Marie Simpson, “a homie from Virginia,” who had played in the orchestra earlier in the set, back to the stage to join Wasily, Lea, and the band for a set-closing “Ants Marching”.
After a short encore break, Dave returned to the stage and played a solo “Rye Whiskey” before the band joined him to cap the night off with “Grey Street”.
