As citizens all over the United States deal with the delay of mail-in ballots, things are tense. It appears that the entire country is holding in one long, anxiety-induced breath as we wait for the official results. Meanwhile, some musicians are stepping up to do what they have always done—calm an uneasy world. One of those musicians is Dave Matthews, who took to Instagram on Election Night to offer a soothing cover of Buffalo Springfield‘s “For What It’s Worth”.

The song marked Matthews’ debut solo performance of the 1966 single written by Stephen Stills. However, Dave and Tim Reynolds havepreviously incorporated elements of the song into “Jimi Thing” on April 21st, 2007 and January 11th, 2009.

In the video, we find a solo Matthews sitting at his piano. The scarce cover transposes the guitar harmonics to grand piano, as Matthews provides scat singing for the percussive elements. The whole rendition is light and soothing, which is exactly what many of us need as the hours continue to mount without a clear winner in the 2020 Presidential Election. To close the video, Matthews simply requests, “Stay safe y’all, look after each other. Care for each other.”
