Dave Matthews has announced he will be unable to perform at two upcoming events, FireAid and the MusiCares Persons of the Year Gala honoring the Grateful Dead, due to “a critical illness in the family.”

Dave Matthews, who hosted his annual destination festival with Tim Reynolds in Mexico over the weekend, was scheduled to perform with John Mayer for the first time ever at L.A.’s Kia Forum tomorrow night during the FireAid benefit concert, a dual-venue fundraising event aimed at providing support for communities devastated by the L.A. wildfires. The lineup includes Alanis Morissette, Anderson. Paak, Dawes, Graham Nash, Green Day, John Fogerty, Joni Mitchell, No Doubt, P!nk, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stephen Stills, Stevie Nicks, and The Black Crowes. A separate, equally impressive lineup will take the stage over at L.A.’s Intuit Dome on the same night, including Billie Eilish, Earth, Wind & Fire, Gracie Abrams, Jelly Roll, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Lil Baby, Olivia Rodrigo, Peso Pluma, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Sting, and Tate McRae.

Matthews was also booked to perform the following night, Friday, January 31st, alongside another stacked lineup during a special gala honoring the Grateful Dead as the MusiCares Persons of the Year. Although he won’t make it to this weekend’s MusiCares gala, Dave Matthews recently paid tribute to the Grateful Dead at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, where he played “Sugaree” with Derek TrucksSusan Tedeschi, and more before closing out the show with a rousing rendition of “Not Fade Away”. He also performed a moving version of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” with Emmylou Harris for Kennedy Center Honoree Bonnie Raitt, who turned the song into a smash hit via her 1974 cover.

Fans can catch Dave Matthews Band on the group’s newly announced spring/summer tour, which will be the band’s only shows of 2025.
