Dave Matthews appeared on CNN‘s State Of The Union to perform a recent song in support of refugees from Ukraine and around the world Sunday. He spoke remotely to host Jake Tapper, who was in Kyiv to interview Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky.

Before playing his new song, “Something To Tell My Baby”, Dave Matthews spoke about the need to raise awareness about the violence happening in Ukraine and around the world.

“It’s just unfathomable to those of us who are far from it, but it’s not only happening [in Ukraine]. It’s happening in Yemen. It’s happening in Myanmar. It’s happening in Nigeria. It’s happening in Afghanistan,” the musician said. “It’s happening in so many places where people are just trying to survive and it’s violence that’s not allowing them to—and terrible violence. And so many of us are part of this chorus of people that are hoping we can somehow turn the tide, and so I thought I would just join in and as many ways as possible raise people’s awareness.”

Dave Matthews performed “Something To Tell My Baby” accompanied by “some friends” on cello, violin, and viola. He originally debuted the song solo on February 20th to open his run with Tim Reynolds at Riviera Maya in Cancún, Mexico. The song begins “You know some day we’re all gonna leave here / maybe sooner than we wanted,” and goes on to talk about leaving something behind, “something that will remind them / something to make them smile when they think about it / something to tell my baby.”

The emotional performance was followed by a sincere plea from Dave Matthews for viewers to do whatever they can to support refugees.

“There’s so many organizations like the IRC [International Rescue Committee] and World Central Kitchen,” he said. “There are so many great organizations that are helping in different ways to alleviate the suffering of people around the world and there in Ukraine. So everyone do what you can, and let’s take care of each other, ’cause what’s the point otherwise?”
