Jason Crosby tapped Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools to join his Crosby Collective at Mill Valley Music Festival for a set of creative mashups blending songs by the Grateful Dead, Phish, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Michael Jackson, and more.
Joined by drummer John Morgan Kimock, keyboardist Jeremy Jeffers, guitarist Tom Guarna, pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz, and vocalists Lamar Williams Jr., Aletha Mills, and AnDre Washington, they the started the set off with a medley of several songs before launching into a combo of Led Zeppelin’s “Black Dog” and the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias” with Mills on lead vocals. A mashup of jam band giants followed with the Dead’s “I Know You Rider” sung to the tune of Phish’s “Tweezer Reprise”. Next came another inventive combination, “Casey Jones” and Pink Floyd’s “Eclipse”, followed by a mashup of The Doors’ “Riders On The Storm” and Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”, which ultimately gave way to “Shakedown Street”.
Other mashups included ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky” with the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life”, an Allman Brothers Band medley of “Blue Sky”, “Dreams”, and “Melissa” with the Dead’s “Jack Straw”, and Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” with Wings‘ “Band On The Run”.
Elliott Peck then joined in on a more surprising arrangement blending Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well” with U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. Peck stuck around for what has become the Crosby’s signature maship, “Friend Of The Lithium”, combining the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil” with Nirvana‘s “Lithium”.
