Tonight, David Gilmour will make history by hosting the first performance at the ancient Amphitheatre of Pompeii since his band, Pink Floyd, performed there for their Live At Pompeii concert film in 1971. While that concert did not feature an audience, Gilmour’s will, making it the first performance with an audience at the ancient venue in thousands of years.

In honor of the two-night run, which starts today and runs through tomorrow, the island of Pompeii has made Gilmour an honorary citizen. “Thanks to everyone,” said Gilmour, “Here in Pompeii I feel safe, as if I was at home.” The citizenship was conferred by Mayor Ferdinando Uliano.

While the citizenship is certainly an honor for Gilmour, getting to play the first live performance with an audience at an ancient amphitheatre must be a feeling unlike any other. Congrats to David Gilmour!
