Dead & Company were back at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Tuesday for the latest stop on their 2019 spring/summer tour. Following night one at the Hollywood Bowl on Monday, the band welcomed their fans in Hollywoodland back into the Grateful Dead universe with some help from a local high school jazz band to start Tuesday night’s performance.

The show opened up with a notable jazz cover as the band started things off with their rendition of John Coltrane‘s “A Love Supreme”, which featured a sit-in from a Los Angeles-area high school jazz band. Their collaborative cover of the jazz standard then segued right into “Shakedown Street” with the high school band remaining on stage to help perform the funky Grateful Dead classic. Dead & Co. continued the first set momentum by playing right on into “Friend of the Devil” before continuing with “Alabama Getaway”, “Ramble On Rose”, and a lively “Brown-Eyed Women”. The set came to a close following a two-song combination of “Cassidy” into “Fire on the Mountain”.

The band returned to the stage to prove once again that the music never stops as they filled the entire second half of the show with one long, strange nine-song segue beginning with “Estimated Prophet”. From there, they continued into what could be considered a Grateful Dead “Best Hits” playlist, as the music went right into early-Dead staples in “Truckin'”, “He’s Gone”, “St. Stephen”, and “Turn On Your Love Light”. Following the traditional “Drums” > “Space” portion of the second set from Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, the band charged towards the finale with “Standing on the Moon” and “U.S. Blues”. The show’s one-song encore sent fans home with a rendition of Jerry Garcia‘s timeless Dead ballad, “Brokedown Palace”.
