Last night, after an impressive two-night run at Shoreline Amphitheatre, Dead & Company made their way to West Valley City for their first-ever Utah performance. With the venue’s scenic Greater Salt Lake City mountain surroundings stretching behind the stately white stone as far as the eye could see, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti transported the eager audience, creating a remote and cosmic vibe akin to “Standing on the Moon.”
Set one saw the band deliver an entertaining mix of classic Dead tunes and staple covers like Willie Dixon‘s “Wang Dang Doodle” (> from an energetic “I Need A Miracle”), Bob Dylan‘s “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” Jimmy Reed‘s “Big Boss Man,” and Chuck Berry‘s “The Promised Land.” Set two opened with a classic “Lost Sailor” > “Saint of Circumstance,” followed by a run of three live heavy hitters (“He’s Gone,” “Crazy Fingers,” and “Shakedown Street”) which in turn flowed into a pulsating “Drums > Space.”
By the time the atmospherically appropriate Built To Last favorite materialized out of “Space,” the show was bobbing intently through the cosmos, and celebratory renditions of “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad” (set two closer) and “US Blues” (encore) helped bring the Salt Lake voyagers safely back to Earth.
