On Tuesday, May 4th, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi of Tedeschi Trucks Band were officially sworn in as honorary deputies of the Jones County Sheriff’s Office in Jones County, Georgia.

According to local FOX affiliate WGXA, Sheriff Butch Reece explained at the ceremony that Trucks used to ride around with Jones County deputies when he played at the nearby Georgia Rib Company as a 14-year-old guitar prodigy. He added that Derek Trucks “never forgot where he came from nor the people who supported him.”

The Sheriff also told an amusing anecdote about going to visit the Allman Brothers Band‘s farm in Juliette, GA in the 1970s. “It never occurred to me how prominent they would become in the music industry,” he mused.

As Reece later said in a comment, “I guess Derek chose the right path when he chose the music industry instead of being a low paid Deputy Sheriff. Thanks so much for coming by to visit and your continued friendship. Rock on my pal and stay safe.”

Tedeschi Trucks Band will begin a run of tour dates in Japan next week. In late June, they’ll return to the U.S. to begin the 2019 edition of the Wheels of Soul summer tour featuring support from Blackberry Smoke and Shovels & Rope.
