Disney/Pixar’s ‘Soul’, A New Animated Film About Jazz, Legacies, & Life’s Passions, Releases First-Look Trailer [Watch]

Soul, the newest animated feature film from the decorated teams at Disney and Pixar, is sure to appeal to music fans. With a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and a cast featuring Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Questlove, Phylicia Rashad, and Daveed Diggs, Soul looks plenty exciting on paper. The film is due to hit theaters on June 19th, 2020.

Per Soul‘s Wikipedia page, the premise of the film is as follows:

Joe Gardner, a middle school music teacher, has long dreamed of performing jazz music onstage, and finally gets a chance after impressing other jazz musicians during an opening act at the Half Note Club. However, an accident causes Gardner’s soul to be separated from his body and transported to the “You Seminar”, a center in which souls develop and gain passions before being transported to a newborn child, and Gardner must work with souls in training, such as 22, a soul with a dim view on life after being trapped for years at the You Seminar, in order to return to Earth before its too late. 

On Thursday, Disney & Pixar shared the first look at the wholesome new film, and it has us even more excited than we already were. Check it out below:

Questlove also shared his excitement over his involvement with Soul in an Instagram post featuring the new teaser video. In the caption, he explained the thought process he went through when he was first approached to act in the film:

That time [Pixar] FaceTimed me an 11 min pitch so perfect I think I mighta had a [Kleenex]  & some onions in proximity (I mean they created Toy Story 3 & Up & Inside Out so you know….they can tell a compelling story 🤷🏾‍♂️)—-anywho I was like “y’all mean music? scoring?” They were like “nah Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross & Jon Baptiste are handling that” so then….I was like “music…..consulting?” They were all, “we’ll take that too ha ha…….” dumbfounded I said “oh….you mean will I tweet and ig about it when y’all done?” They chuckled “we like that as well….but ahmir….we want you IN the movie….acting!!!……hello?…..hello?….. uh…..ques—ahmir?…..ahmir?” I still can’t believe this is happening.
