Grammy-nominated viral jazz duo DOMi & JD Beck welcomed Mac DeMarco to perform their song “TWO SHRiMPS” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday.
Currently in the midst of their first-ever tour in support of their debut album, Not Tight, DOMi & JD Beck stopped by 30 Rockefeller Plaza for their second late-night television appearance of the year, having made their TV debut with mentor Anderson .Paak on Jimmy Kimmel Live in July. The duo was once again joined by one of their famous collaborators, Mac DeMarco, who starred in the video for their debut single, “SMiLE”, in addition to singing on the track “TWO SHRiMPS”, which he co-wrote.
The group performed amidst sculpted bushes, tall grass, and blossoming trees clearly reminiscent of the enchanted forest from the Not Tight album cover, though the manicured garden aesthetic was a far cry from the wild jungle they have recreated on stage at each of their live shows (and at NPR’s Tiny Desk). The more refined stage design was mirrored by the fashion-forward duo’s toned-down wardrobe choices—perhaps a sign of maturity from the young musicians, undermined only slightly by DOMi’s toilet throne.
DeMarco, on the other hand, rocked a “Jolene 2: The Return” t-shirt with a hand-scribbled drawing of Dolly Parton (who was a guest that evening on the same program) tucked into worn-out blue jeans as he danced in front of the duo, singing along effortlessly while they navigated the song’s complex meters. The song’s lyrics were extra poignant sung by the veteran DeMarco alongside the young, burgeoning duo, who recently received two Grammy nominations including Best New Artist: “Two shrimp seated clearly / I must be gettin’ old … / The old man singing the young song.”
