With the third installment of quarterly vinyl club Rare Sounds, Color Red and its founder, Eddie Roberts, continue to stoke the lasting embers of the the Funk and Soul revival. Following Box #1: The Essentials and Box #2: Everywhere You Go, the latest Rare Sounds vinyl box has been dubbed Fanning The Flames.
Just in time to celebrate your favorite music-loving dad for Father’s Day, Color Red is also offering a 15% discount on new quarterly and annual Rare Sounds subscriptions using the promo code “FUNKYDAD”.
The Fanning The Flames box from Rare Sounds features the three records released in the early 2000s by musicians who were influenced not only by the original funk of the ’60s and ’70s, but also by the styles it helped inspire worldwide during the ’90s: Pushin’ On by The Quantic Soul Orchestra (2005, TruThoughts Records), This Is Speedometer by Speedometer (2003, Blow it Hard Records), and Step it Up by The Bamboos (2006, TruThoughts Records).

Speedometer was a six-piece U.K. group, all fanatics of The Meters, led by guitarist Leigh Gracie. They eventually landed the role as backing band for legendary luminaries like Marva Whitney and Eddie Bo when they toured the U.K., as well as pre-fame tours with Sharon Jones and Lee Fields.
The Bamboos were one of the first bands lighting funk and soul signal fires in Australia. Their career highlights include playing and touring with scene stealers Will Holland (a.k.a Quantic) and singer Alice Russell in The Quantic Soul Orchestra. On Pushin’ On, Holland is playing most of the instruments himself, a testament to the funkster’s virtuosity.
As Color Red explains in the collection’s description, “There is a consistency that runs through all these three albums—driving the funk forward with an understanding and respect of the past and a foot firmly in the future.”
The Fanning The Flamesbox from Color Red’s Rare Sounds vinyl series, curated by Eddie Roberts, can be purchased as part of a box set, or as part of a quarterly or annual subscription.
