The late Eddie Van Halen was a towering presence in the Los Angeles music scene during its ’70s and ’80s heyday and now, thanks to L.A. artist Robert Vargas, a massive EVH mural now towers over the back lot of the Guitar Center on Sunset Strip. The mural, titled “Long Live The King”, is set to be officially unveiled on Tuesday on what would have been Van Halen’s 66th birthday.

The mural was painted freehand as the music of Van Halen blasted through the lot, with Vargas often inviting people to join in on the creative process by driving up or tuning in via Instagram Live as he worked.

As Vargas explained in an Instagram post before beginning the project, “I am beyond excited to create this mural of one of my all-time creative heroes, [Eddie Van Halen]. This mural is truly for the fans and a celebration of my favorite rock band, [Van Halen’s] legacy.”

The creation of the Guitar Center-commissioned mural began on January 11th and was thoroughly documented by Vargas via Instagram. You can watch the creation of the Eddie Van Halen mural unfold below, including the time Zakk Wylde came by to check it out.
