NYC’s Global Citizen is always a promise for unexpected moments. The Chris Martin-curated event aims to “harness actions from millions of Global Citizens around the world to hold world leaders accountable to the progress made toward achieving the Global Goals set out by the United Nations last year.” The night saw it’s rock-and-roll highlight when Eddie Vedder joined the Coldplay singer for a three-song set opener.

The Pearl Jam frontman opened Martin’s set with a joint cover of Crowded House‘s “Don’t Dream It’s Over”, performed entirely on a piano and guitar, before going into a sensational version of PJ’s “Nothingman.” The duo closed their set with a cover of Patti Smith‘s “People Have the Power”, a protest anthem that spoke volumes to the contemporary moments of our time.

Thanks to MSNBC, we can enjoy pro-shot footage of these epic performances below:

After Vedder departed from the stage, Martin stayed to close his four-song set with a solo acoustic version of Prince‘s “Raspberry Beret.” The stripped-down version was the perfect way to end his brief, touching performance. “We miss you Prince, we miss you David, we miss everyone we miss,” he said.

Vedder also performed earlier in the day with Yusuf/Cat Stevens, performing “Father and Son,” which you can also watch below:
