Quickly ascending Connecticut jam-rock quartet Eggy strutted into 2022 in the same way it entered 2021: a pair of shows at Soundcheck Studios in Pembroke, MA, and The Warehouse at FTC in Fairfield, CT.

After putting out some of the best quarantine content of 2020, including full-band livestreams from its home studio (known as the “Egg Crate”) and a creative Choose Your Own Eggventure storytelling/webcast series, Eggy staged a true breakout year in 2021. Guitarist/vocalist Jake Brownstein, bassist/vocalist Mike Goodman, keyboardist/vocalist Dani Battat, and drummer/vocalist Alex Bailey channeled all of their lockdown practice and put it to good use throughout a full year of touring.

After a sold-out homecoming show at The Warehouse at FTC last year, the group found itself making its long-awaited debut at The Peach Music Festival, climbing up the Adirondack Independence Music Festival lineup, touring the U.S. with Spafford without repeating a song, opening for Twiddle during its Frendsgiving run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, and releasing a live album that celebrated the successes. With the COVID-19 Omicron variant forcing the cancellation of its New Year’s performances, Eggy barrelled into 2022 energized and ready to pick up where it left off.

On Friday, January 14th, Brownstein and company made the short trip to Pembroke, MA for its second-ever headlining show at Soundcheck Studios. The 2022 kickoff began with an apt “Lost and Found” from the band’s debut album, 2019’s Watercolor Days. This eventually found its match in “Wayless” before a mashup of “Burritos El Chavo 2” and The Beatles‘ “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window” mashup dubbed “Burreatles”. Goodman’s pulsating basslines carried Eggy through the harmonies of “High Noon”, which led to the return of “Lost and Found” and a set-ending jam explosion in “BubaGum”.

“Shells’ and the celebrity shoutout “Ricky Gervais” jumpstarted set two and set up a debut of the Grateful Dead‘s “Saint of Circumstance”. A perfect pairing for this Bob Weir/John Barlow cut, “Onitsuka Tiger” went back and forth with “Saint of Circumstance”, creating a line of segues that finished both tunes and the final set. With time for one more, Eggy closed with “12 Pounds of Pain” and readied itself for its homecoming in Fairfield on Saturday.

Wasting no time, Brownstein, Goodman, Battat, and Bailey opened with “Sweaters for Strawmen”, a track initially debuted via the band’s Patreon on November 21st. “Sweaters” linked up with “City Lights” ahead of the first cover of the hometown throwdown, Brad Goodall‘s “Casa De Mel”. Bailey delivered Goodall’s lyrics while Brownstein laid down some country-inspired licks on his six-string. As the first set wound down, Bailey delivered more vocals on “Rosetta Stone” before Battat sang on “Shadow” and a set-ending “Wireless”.

Revving the engine for set two, the band took The Warehouse at FTC for a ride with “All Wheels Turnin'” and eventually linked up with “Hux”. Before Eggy could finish the Watercolor Days track it slipped into Pink Floyd‘s “Pigs (Three Different Ones)”, a song the four-piece outfit hadn’t performed in 176 shows (per The Carton). “One More Dance” and “Fly Frederick Fly” brought the eventful evening towards its end, but not before Eggy reprised “12 Pounds of Pain” and encored with “Golden Gate Dancer”.
