The Flaming Lips have shared another live video from their bubble concert experiment in October, this time with “Brother Eye”. The American Head track comes following pro-shot footage of “Assassins of Youth” from the same socially-distanced show last month in Oklahoma City. Additionally, the band has announced “the world’s first space bubble concert”, set for The Criterion in Oklahoma City on December 11th.

Also held at The Criterion in the band’s hometown of O.K.C., this pilot concert was touted by The Flaming Lips as the latest innovation in sanitary concert technology, with 100 fans inside 100 bubbles spread throughout the venue. The evening featured an abridged setlist of only two songs played twice each. Now that the band has tested the method, they are set to put on a full-fledged concert next month.

Like many of the tracks on the band’s latest album, American Head, “Brother Eye” comes from Coyne’s real life experiences. Growing up as the fifth of six children with four brothers in an Irish Catholic family, the future enigmatic frontman watched his brothers participate in all kinds of reckless behavior, from drugs to motorcycles and oftentimes a combination of the two. In an interview with Rolling Stone for the release of American Head he said,

Steven [Drozd] and I both talked about having these older brothers that we kind of vicariously lived through. We saw the way we wanted to live; we saw the way not to live. I think we both have a little bit of survivor’s guilt about that, that we didn’t embrace everything that they did. A lot of my brother’s friends died from drugs and overdoses and motorcycle accidents and stuff.

Thus, the repeated phrase, “Brother I don’t want you to die/Can you live forever?” takes on added emotional weight. Meanwhile, a looped, techno-pop beat holds “Brother Eye” together along with calming acoustic guitar strums.
