Live For Live Music and Denver’s Cervantes’ are excited to bring our serial super jam, The Funk Sessions, to New Orleans for a special performance during the “daze between” Jazz Fest weekends on Tuesday, April 28th at Maison [BUY TICKETS HERE].
While The Funk Sessions (which typically take place at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver, CO) feature a rotating cast of musicians, we decided to reprise one of our favorite past lineups for the second-ever New Orleans edition of The Funk Sessions.
Just like the post-Phish, August 2019 edition of the concert series—which was appropriately billed as “The Phunk Sessions“—this New Orleans Funk Session will feature bassist and local legend George Porter Jr. (The Meters), organ master Robert Walter (Mike Gordon/20th Congress/Greyboy Allstars), Turkuaz members Michelangelo Carubba (drums), Craig Brodhead (guitar), and Shira Elias (vocals), and The Motet members Lyle Divinsky (vocals), Drew Sayers (sax), and Parris Fleming (trumpet).
Back in August, this funky crew kept Denver dancing late into the night with renditions of funk and soul classics by The Jones Girls, Parliament, The JBs, Aretha Franklin, Rick James, and more. The biggest surprise of that night, however, came when Phish bassist Mike Gordon made his way from Dick’s Sporting Goods Park over to Cervantes’ to jump in on a rendition of Little Feat‘s “Spanish Moon”. With so many talented artists milling around New Orleans during Jazz Fest, we wouldn’t be surprised if some surprise guests popped in on The Funk Sessions once again this time around.
