In 1967, the prolific funk group, The Meters, came together, composed of Art Neville, George Porter Jr., Zigaboo Modeliste, and Leo Nocentelli. During their tenure together, the crew established themselves as the funk act, largely shaping the sound of the genre as we know it today with their synthesis of the sounds of New Orleans’ second lines into tight funk grooves. The Meters are indisputably a historic group within the funk scene and beyond, having been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times since they first became eligible back in 1994. Today, founding members Art Neville and George Porter Jr. continue to carry the funk torch with their current touring unit, The Funky Meters, which also sees Terrence Houston behind the kit and features original Funky Meters’ guitarist Brian Stoltz.

On Thursday, September 14th, The Funky Meters are hitting Washington D.C. with a performance at The Hamilton. While the original Meters lineup disbanded in the late 70’s, Neville and Porter later reconvened in 90’s with The Funky Meters. After decades-long careers, Art Neville and George Porter Jr. are still a sight to behold, as the duo still put on energized shows featuring tight renditions of fan favorites from across their long-spanning careers. Considering that bills with the original Meters lineup are increasingly rare save for infrequent one-off performances, The Funky Meters offer fans the chance to see two literal living legends in action and playing the original tunes that kicked off their meteoric rise to fame.
