Garcia Family Provisions are opening the vault for the 20th edition of the GarciaLive archival series. Out on June 30th, GarciaLive Volume 20 captures Jerry Garcia Band‘s full performance at Cape Cod Coliseum in South Yarmouth, MA on June 18th, 1982, plus some extra filler from 1981 in San Francisco.
Making landfall on Massachusetts’ historic Cape Cod, the Jerry Garcia Band looked a little different from the rough-and-tumble quartet that played through the turn of the decade. The Grateful Dead guitarist and his trusty bassist John Kahn had recruited some fresh blood, including Jerry’s Dead bandmate Bill Kreutzmann on drums, Melvin Seals on organ, Jimmy Warren on electric piano, and Liz Stires and Julie Stafford on backing vocals.

This concert saw JGB co-headline with Bobby & The Midnites, delivering a single 90-minute set where the band hadn’t a moment to spare. The eight-song performance set off with the perennial opener “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and included the rarity “Valerie”, making its first-ever appearance on a GarciaLive release. Jerry included nods to influences The Beatles (“Dear Prudence”) and Bob Dylan (“Simple Twist of Fate”), while also giving a taste of his new work with the recently penned “Run for the Roses” before closing out the set with “They Love Each Other”.
But wait, there’s more. For the first time, a GarciaLive release will contain filler with four songs lifted from JGB’s June 1st, 1981 hometown show at The Stone in San Francisco. The snippet cuts to the meat of this previously uncirculated show, picking up with Jimmy Cliff‘s “Sitting in Limbo” through J.J. Cale‘s “After Midnight” and riding off into the sunset with “Deal” seguing into Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue”.
