Gary Clark Jr. has shared a new music video for “Pearl Cadillac“, which appears on his outstanding 2018 album, This Land.

The soulful slow-burn of a song focuses on the appreciation Clark has for his mother and his drive to repay her passion and devotion. Clark never explicitly references his relationship with his mom in the lyrics to “Pearl Cadillac”, leaving the passive listener to it’s a run-of-the-mill love song. A deeper dive into the words, however, reveals the true nature of the track (“You say I owe you nothin’; If I could, I’d give you the world; You made somethin’ from nothin’; I thank God for such a beautiful girl”).

In the new “Pearl Cadillac” music video, the mother-son bond alluded to in the song becomes a powerful visual focal point. “This is my first video on 35mm b&w film,” Clark said of the video in a Facebook post. “We bought all of the film in the US to make this happen. Clément [Oberto] the director was really passionate about this story and so he did his thing in telling the story of Pearl Cadillac. I [sic] Just tried not to waste the film. Great video shoot experience. Thanks to everyone that made it happen. Hope you enjoy.”
