Glastonbury Festival has revealed the initial artist lineup for its 2023 event, which will feature headline performances by Guns N’ Roses and Arctic Monkeys in addition to previously announced headliner Elton John. The festival has received scrutiny for its exclusively male headliners, which organizers said was due to an industry-wide lack of female representation, though Lizzo is also among this year’s main acts.

“We’re trying our best,” organizer Emily Eavis, daughter of Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis, told the Guardian. She went on to posit that the music industry should invest in more female musicians to create future headliners. “This starts way back with the record companies, radio. I can shout as loud as I like but we need to get everyone on board.”

Last year’s Glastonbury festival struck a more feminist tone, with several artists raising their voices in response to the U.S. Supreme Courts controversial overturning of Roe V. Wade, which protected women’s right to abortion. The event also saw an intergenerational collaboration between Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, and Bruce Springsteen during McCartney’s headlining set, which marked Grohl’s first return to the stage following the death of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.

Also among the Glastonbury 2023 lineup are Lil Nas X, Lana Del Rey, Lewis Capaldi, Maggie Rogers, Måneskin, Phoenix, The War On Drugs, Thundercat, Rina Sawayama, The Chicks, Wizkid, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, and more, with additional “artists, performers, and attractions to be announces across over 100 stages and areas.” Proceeds from the festival will benefit Oxfam, Wateraid, Greenpeace, “and other worthy causes.”

Tickets for Glastonbury Festival 2023 sold out just over an hour after going on sale, before any headliners were announced, but additional tickets are likely to become available ahead of the event. Visit the festival website for more information.
