British progressive jazz trio GoGo Penguin will air a pre-taped performance filmed in Studio Two at London’s Abbey Road Studios next month on October 29th at 9 p.m. ET. The band was forced to cancel all of their planned 2020 performances with the arrival of COVID-19 in the spring, but continue to push the promotion behind their new self-titled studio album, which arrived via Blue Note Records back in June.
According to the announcement, the ticketed virtual stream of the trio’s pro-shot studio set will include performances of most of the material from GoGo Penguin in addition to their previous albums. The visual accompaniment to the performance was handled by their lighting director Lewis Howell, while producer Joe Reiser captured the live audio.
“We didn’t want to perform in an empty venue,” bassist Nick Blacka said with the announcement. “Somehow it just felt weird trying to create the energy of a concert in an empty room, but we had recorded an EP in Studio Two back in 2015 and loved the space and somehow it just made sense to film a show here.”
Drummer Rob Turner also added, “When we perform we’re always reacting to each other but also the crowd. The people and the energy in the space is as much a part of the performance as we are. Studio Two is imbued with the ghosts of all the incredible music and musicians that have performed there. It has an atmosphere all of its own. You really feel the expanse of time, how much has happened before you and how much will continue to happen after you.”
