A gold and diamond pendant depicting Phish bassist Mike Gordon in his widely-memed, mid-air pose from Dick’s 2018 is being auctioned off to benefit Showing Up For Racial Justice (SURJ), a non-profit whose theory of change includes white people joining the effort to de-legitimize racist institutions and fight for a fair economy that refuses to pit communities against each other.
The auction is sponsored by the world-renowned diamond wholesaler, antique collector, and jewelry designer Timeless Gem (who designed the piece) along with Michael Berg, the promoter of fan-favorite festivals like Suwannee Hulaween, North Coast, and more.
The 14-karat white gold and diamond pendant, inspired by the viral photo captured by Phish photographer Rene Huemer, is one-of-a-kind in a series of 3 unique versions ever made. The only other two alternate designs in existence were created and gifted to Mike Gordon and his wife ahead of Phish’s 2018 fall tour. The piece will come with a heavy-duty sterling silver chain and will be custom engraved for the winner on the back. The piece for this auction will never be recreated or reproduced again and carries an approximate retail value of $4,200. 100% of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to SURJ.
Timeless Gem and Berg appreciate and encourage fans to join them in their Phish-themed activism efforts in the name of racial justice reform. With this auction, they are trying to encourage other phans to participate in the movement to end systemic racism in the United States. Notes Berg, “As a society, we’re all collectively on the precipice of a historical new civil rights movement that has the momentum to better life in the states for BIPOC.”
The live auction is being hosted via Michael Berg’s Instagram (@iamvanghost) and will run through Thursday, June 11th at 11:59 p.m. CT. The winning bidder will be determined and announced on Friday, June 12th.
