Live from Port Chester, NY, it’s Goose! Friday’s show at The Capitol Theatre, the third of five gigs for the band at the beloved venue this week, included another original debut—the second of the run—and special guest Jimmy Fallon.
The Tonight Show host, who welcomed Goose to his program back in December, was spotted in a Lincoln box early on in Friday’s show but did not take the stage until the encore. “He had us on his show, now he’s here on our show,” Peter Anspach quipped as the multi-talented Saturday Night Live alum took the stage.
Throwing it back to Goose’s bar band roots, Anspach grabbed his Stratocaster and joined lead guitarist Rick Mitarotonda on the Mack Rice-penned Wilson Pickett staple, “Mustang Sally”. The almost cliche cover, banned in some establishments among other esteemed classics like “Stairway To Heaven”, “Free Bird”, and “Smoke On The Water”, gave Fallon the spotlight to which he is so effortlessly accustomed.
Fallon’s singing style walks the line between his go-to Mick Jagger impression and his jittery Van Morrison, with Goose quietly backing him up in a way that recalls a young The Band making its bones with Ronnie “The Hawk” Hawkins. Peter at one point offers a reminder of whose show it is with a nice Stratty solo for a quintessential rock band moment. Ever the performer, Fallon laid it all on the line by closing out the sit-in with a fall to the ground, writhing spastically on the stage as the band rang out the final notes in utter bewilderment.
