Goose’s inaugural Viva El Gonzo festival has been packed with surprise collaborations and memorable musical moments. From Goose guitarist Rick Mitarotonda sitting in with Dawes on the Grateful Dead‘s “Fire on the Mountain” and with Eggy on Paul Simon‘s “You Can Call Me Al”, to Rick and Peter Anspach joining Dogs In A Pile on Stevie Wonder‘s “Boogie On Reggae Woman” and “Trunk Rum”, to Goose welcoming both My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James and Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith from Dawes, the guest appearances have been nonstop, but one of the most memorable highlights so far came during Goose’s headlining set on Thursday (night one), when former Twiddle frontman Mihali joined the band for a cover of Nirvana’s “In Bloom”.

Mihali’s raw, expressive vocals were a perfect match for the grunge classic, which appeared late in the first set. He previously played the song with Twiddle during the band’s ’90s-themed New Year’s Eve show in 2022 while rocking a Cobain-inspired getup, including a flannel shirt, big “clout goggle” sunglasses, and a plaid cap with Holden Caulfield-style ear flaps.

The set also featured the live debut of a brand-new original, “Torero”, while the second set included the band’s first-ever take on Christopher Cross’ yacht rock staple “Ride Like The Wind”, plus a cover of Fat Freddy’s Drop’s reggae-funk jam “Fish In The Sea”.
