Gov’t Mule closed out their 7th Island Exodus destination getaway in Negril, Jamaica last night, featuring a number of guests as well as a great blend of cover songs, including tunes from the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Bob Marley, Al Green, and the Grateful Dead.

After an appropriate “Mule” > “What Is Hip?” > “Mule” opener, a reggae-infused cover of Al Green’s “I’m A Ram,” which appears on Gov’t Mule’s 2007 reggae/dub album Mighty High, the guests startred pouring in. Mule received support from long time collaborator Ron Holloway on a cover of The J.B.’s “Pass The Peas” mid-set and were then joined by Jackie Greene and Machan Taylor for a trio of Rolling Stones songs, “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,” “Slave,” and “Bitch,” Holloway sitting-in on the latter two songs as well.

Set two got underway with a pair of Neil Young covers, “Tonight’s The Night” and “Cinnamon Girl,” Jackie Greene sitting in, just as he did during Gov’t Mule’s tribute to Neil Young at their 2014 Halloween show at the Taft Theatre in Cincinatti, OH. After versions of “Fallen Down” and a jam to the Dead’s “The Other One,” the home stretch of Mule’s final night in Jamaica featured Albert King’s “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” and “Rebel Soulshine,” a mashup between the Allman Brothers Band’s “Soulshine” and Bob Marley’s “Rebel Music.” With “Game Face” and “Time To Confess” serving as the encore, Gov’t Mule closed the book on yet another successful Island Exodus. See you next year!
