Last night, Gov’t Mule’s summer tour continued with a stop at the Brenton Skating Plaza in Des Moines, Iowa. Once again, The Magpie Salute opened the night and returned to the stage later in the evening to join Gov’t Mule’s encore with back-to-back covers, including the Allman Brothers Band‘s “Mountain Jam” and Neil Young‘s “Cortez The Killer”.

To open the show, the Magpie Salute—featuring Rich Robinson and other ex-members of the Black Crowes, who just recently released a brand new album—heavily leaned on the album for their forty-five-minute set. Warren Haynes and company took the stage next for one single set, pulling heavily on their original material, with selections from 2017’s Revolution Come…Revolution Go on mighty full display. Almost halfway through the set, during “Sco-Mule”, a jam written by Mule and John Scofield, The Magpie Salute keyboardist Matt Slocum came out to join Danny Louis on the ivories. The band returned to their key members for the remainder of the set, which again focused on their original material.

As has been the custom for this tour, Mule brought up members of The Magpie Salute for the encore. Guitarist Rich Robinson, guitarist Marc Ford, and keyboardist Matt Slocum joined Gov’t Mule for smoking covers of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Mountain Jam” and Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer”.
