On Friday night, Gov’t Mule closed their Spring tour at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans, Louisiana with Soulive opening up as support. Warren Haynes welcomed a bevy of special guests, to the delight of all those in attendance. With Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in town scheduled to play their headlining Sunday slot at Jazz Fest, and Soulive on site, it became a marvelous spectacle of true rock and roll.

The Official L4LM Guide To Jazz Fest After Dark

To start, the Levee Horns performed the first four songs of the set, before drummer Steve Ferrone joined in to replace Matt Abts. The band went on to play a mix of originals and covers, before again welcoming friends to the stage. Smoky Greenwell, Eric Krasno, Neal Evans, and Rob Blair all joined in for an unforgettable cover of The Rolling Stones‘ “The Spider & The Fly” while giving Jorgen Carlsson a chance to rest. The band then returned to their roots with the introduction of two new songs from their upcoming record, “Revolution Come, Revolution Go” and “Stone Cold Rage.”

The second set opened with a blistering cover of “Creep” by Radiohead. Smoky Greenwell and Alvin Youngblood Hart then joined in for a blues cover of “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl,” sticking around for “The Hunter.” The Mule then shifted into an incredible jam that featured “St. Stephen,” “No Quarter,” and a “How Many More Years” with “Higher Ground” teases and “Dazed & Confused” lyrics. The second set closed with “Blind Man In The Dark.”

Gov’t Mule returned to the stage for an enormous encore, beginning with drums. The drums jam segued into Neil Young‘s “Rocking In The Free World” then into Jimi Hendrix‘s “Machine Gun.” From there, the band shifted into The Doors‘ “When The Music’s Over,” and back into “Machine Gun,” before closing with “Rocking In The Free World.” Watch the entire sequence below, courtesy of Wicked Flea:
