Following Gov’t Mule‘s Saturday show, which saw Warren Haynes, Matt Abts, Danny Louis, and Jorgen Carlsson play two sets with a slew of guests, the band closed out a busy 2017 with their customary New Year’s Eve performance at The Beacon Theatre in New York City. Earlier this month, the band had announced that their NYE performance would be dubbed “The Rocking Mule Revue.” After great first set featuring a foreshadowing version of “About to Rage” with a “Les Brers In A Minor” tease, a cover of the Allman Brothers Band‘s “Kind Of Bird” with more ABB teases, and a closing Blind Willie Johnson, the band got their Rocking Revue underway.
Revolutions Come And Revolutions Go, But Warren Haynes Is Here To Stay [Interview/Album Stream]
The themed New Year’s show played off the appropriate theme of “Revolution,” in the year when they released their tenth studio album, Revolution Come, Revolution Go… Throughout the 18-song set, the band welcomed Jackie Greene, Shawn Pelton, and more for a set of classic “revolutionary,” politically and socially conscious anthems including songs by Steely Dan, Thunderclap Newman, Dr. John, James Brown, T. Rex, Bob Marley, Sam Cooke, Bob Dylan, Gil Scott-Heron, Willi Williams, The Clash, Van Morrison, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, The Temptations, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and David Bowie, as well as the title track from Revolution Come, Revolution Go…
They finally left for their encore break after “Changes”, but they were still far from finished. They opened the encore with another Allmans’ suite, which took them from “Melissa” into “Mountain Jam” and back into “Melissa”. From there, the band kicked into Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In the Free World” (with Jimmy Vivino), which moved into and back out of Jimi Hendrix & Band of Gypsys‘ “Machine Gun”. Finally, the band returned to finish out “Mountain Jam” and round out a rocking tribute to “sticking it to the man.”
