Gov’t Mule on Saturday served as hosts of an all-day musical event at Westville Music Bowl featuring sets by Oteil & Friends, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Pressing Strings. The headlining performance from the blues jam-rock ensemble witnessed guest appearances by Oteil Burbridge, Eric Krasno, the Dirty Dozen horns, and more.

Mule’s single set performance in New Haven, CT began with quick hits including the opening “Soulshine” followed by “Mule” and “Banks of the Deep End”. After “Larger Than Life” and “Devil Likes It Slow”, the guests started pouring in as the Dirty Dozen Brass Band joined in on “I’d Rather Go Blind”, popularized by Etta James, and the traditional “John The Revelator”.

The ensemble then extended even further with the addition of Warren Haynes‘ former Allman Brothers bandmate Oteil Burbridge, who joined in—along with Dirty Dozen—on Herbie Hancock‘s “Chameleon”. Burbridge then brought up his Friends for the evening Eric Krasno and Jason Crosby for a run through the blues standard “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl”. Krasno and Crosby would then sub out for guitarist Tom Guarna, who sat in on ABB’s “Whipping Post”, leaving drummer Pete Lavezzoli as the member of Oteil & Friends to not sit in with Mule.

All of the guests then departed the stage, leaving Mule to deliver a cover of “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” from the band’s 2021 album, Heavy Load Blues. Those who didn’t get a chance to sample New Haven’s famous pizza then got the opportunity to fill up on a jam sandwich of “Beautifully Broken” >  Tom Petty‘s “Breakdown” > “Beautifully Broken” before Mule closed out the set with a one-two punch of “Wake Up Dead” and “Blind Man In The Dark”. Returning for the encore, Gov’t Mule closed out the day-long musical marathon with Tom Waits‘ “Make It Rain”.
