Gov’t Mule returned to Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Sunday for the latest stop on their ongoing 25th anniversary run of shows in 2019. For their return to the picturesque outdoor venue, the rock band recruited some help from Lettuce drummer Adam Deitch (and his parents) in addition to performing a few nods to music performed at Woodstock for the festival’s own 50th anniversary over the weekend.
The rock quartet opened the first set with “Traveling Tune”, which they would revisit to close out a few hours later. Haynes then brought out his guitar slide to work around the neck on “Dreams”, followed by a dark and dreamy rendition of “Thorazine Shuffle” and then “Time To Confess”. The first set continued with a pair of rockin’ tunes from Revolution Come…Revolution Go with “Drawn That Way” and “Stone Cold Rage” before revisiting “Beautifully Broken” from their 2001 The Deep End Vol. 1 LP. The set concluded with “No Need To Suffer” and the band’s cover of Al Green‘s “I Am A Ram”.
The start of the second set saw the band return to the stage with a few extra members as Lettuce’s Adam Deitch along with his parents, Bobby and Denise, all joined in on percussion during a drum-heavy cover of Santana‘s “Jingo”. Gov’t Mule followed their counter culture-era set opener with a cover of Sonny Boy Williamson‘s “Eyesight To The Blind”. The music transitioned right into a tune from the band’s own catalog with “Game Face” before turning to another cover in The Allman Brothers Band‘s “Mountain Jam” and finally closing the three-song, four-part segue by returning to “Game Face”.
Following a performance of “Captured”, the band welcomed the Deitchs to the stage once again to help play on The Allman Brothers’ “Kind of Bird”. The set continued with an energizing performance of “Blind Man In The Dark”, “Bring On The Music”, and finally returning to “Traveling Tune” to close things out. The band’s one-song encore saw them return to the stage to give their Denver area fans a firey cover of Jimi Hendrix‘s guitar anthem “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” with Warren Haynes shredding his way through the famous rock tune on its 50th-anniversary of being performed at Woodstock.
