Gov’t Mule has announced the first-ever digital release of Stoned Side of the Mule, Vol. 1 & 2. The live album, culled from the band’s 2009 Rolling Stones-themed Halloween show, was issued in 2015 as a vinyl-only release. Along with the announcement, the Warren Haynes-led ensemble shared its rendition of “Under My Thumb”.
Recorded live at The Tower Theatre just outside Philadelphia, PA on October 31st, 2009, Stoned Side of the Mule finds the Southern blues outfit carrying on its tradition of musical costumes. Previous installments included tributes to Pink Floyd, heard on Dark Side of the Mule, as well as Led Zeppelin. In 2009, however, Gov’t Mule tipped its cap to one of the foundational bands of rock n’ roll.
The 13-track album—set for reissue on transparent red and blue 2LP vinyl as well as on CD and digitally for the first time—features takes on Stones classics including “Paint It Black”, “Wild Horses”, “Brown Sugar”, and more. The band gets some help along the way from saxophonist Steve Elson (Stevie Ray Vaughan, David Bowie) and guitarist/vocalist Jackie Greene (Phil Lesh & Friends) who appear throughout the cover set.
First issued by Provogue in 2015, Stoned Side of the Mule, Vol. 1 & 2 also celebrated the 20th anniversary of Gov’t Mule. The album quickly sold out and is now slated for a first-ever European repress as it also joins CD and digital formats.
