The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archive video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “Brown Eyed Women” at Chicago’s Soldier Field on June 22nd, 1991.
Taken from the transitional period following Brent Mydland‘s death in July 1990, this summer 1991 performance hears the two-pronged approach of Vince Welnick and Bruce Hornsby. The double dose of keys gives some added texture to the Dead as they began what would be their ultimate downswing. Though the band doesn’t shine quite like their glory days, there are diamonds in the rough, including Jerry Garcia‘s nimble mid-song solo. The bottle may be dusty be the liquor is clean.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
Since its debut in 1971, Brown-Eyed Women was one of the Dead’s most-played first set songs, played almost 350 times. This version is from the terrific 6/22/91 show in Chicago, featuring the short-lived two keyboardist arrangement with Vince and Bruce.
