The colorful world of the Grateful Dead continues to live on stronger than ever, even nearly a quarter of a century following the death of Jerry Garcia. On Thursday, Pitchfork reported that a graphic novel chronicling the famous jam forefathers’ notorious psychedelic early years will arrive next spring through Z2 Comics.

The book, titled Grateful Dead Origins, was written by Chris Miskiewicz with illustrations from Noah Van Sciver. According to the book’s page on the publisher’s website, Grateful Dead Origins will look to provide Deadheads and curious onlookers with an “in-depth and personal look at the formation of one of the most important American rock bands of all time, exploring the early days of Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Pigpen, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. The story of the band’s transformation from a bar band performing as the Warlocks to becoming the creators of their own sound and forefathers for the jam band culture is depicted in the original story.”

A standard edition of the book will include a download featuring some of the band’s early music. A limited edition 9×15 oversized version of the book, however, will come packaged with a 12” LP containing previously-unreleased Grateful Dead music in addition to three art prints. The limited run collector’s deluxe edition will come with a hardcover and will be individually numbered.

Fans can click here to pre-order the deluxe edition of the book ahead of it’s April 2020 arrival.
