The Grateful Dead will put out a brand new, 19-disc box on September 7th. Dubbed Pacific Northwest ’73-‘74: The Complete Recordings, the new collection features six full shows: 6/22/73 (P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C.), 6/24/73 (Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR), 6/26/73 (Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA), 5/17/74 (P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada), 5/19/74 (Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR), and  5/21/74 (Hec Edmundson Pavilion – University Of Washington, Seattle, WA).

“In the 1974, the Grateful Dead performed several of the most inspired improvisational jams of their entire 30 touring career, jams that are described by many as some of the finest, purest music the Grateful Dead ever created live on stage,” Graetful Dead archivist David Lemieux told Rolling Stone. “At the top of the list, most Dead Heads consider the 5/19/74 Portland jam out of ‘Truckin’ to be the best of the best, and this restored and remastered release has this show sounding better than we ever could have imagined. It’s majestic, and soars to heights that were reserved for the best Grateful Dead shows ever. Including Portland ’74 amongst the Best Dead Show Ever, up there with Harpur College, Veneta, and Cornell, is not a stretch; after you hear this performance, you’ll know why it’s so highly revered.”

“This boxed set includes six shows of which any could have been released on their own as stand-alone archival releases, several of which very nearly were over the past few years,” Lemieux continues. “We always decided to hold off on any of them being released separately in the hopes and expectations that we’d release them all together as a magnificent boxed set from two of the Dead’s best touring years. We’re thrilled it’s now happening, one of the most exciting, exceptional, and dynamic boxed sets the Grateful Dead have ever released.”

The ’73 and ’74 tours featured a lineup of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Keith Godchaux, and Donna Jean Godchaux (longtime percussionist Mickey Hart was on hiatus from the band during this time). The shows took place just three months after the death of founding keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, who had stopped touring with the band the previous year.

As noted by Lemieux, the forthcoming box set will feature the beloved 5/19/74 “Truckin”. Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait long to hear the fantastic recording of that jam, as the band premiered it earlier today via Rolling Stone. Give that slice of peak Grateful Dead goodness a listen below, and don’t forget to check out the full tracklist from all 19 discs in the Pacific Northwest ’73-‘74: The Complete Recordings box set. Only 15,000 editions of the compilation, which you can pre-order here, will be released.
