The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archive video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “Ship of Fools” at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, NY on July 16th, 1990.
This video joins fellow 7/16/1990 uploads of “Let It Grow“, “High Time“, and Brent Mydland‘s final “Blow Away“. This rendition of “Ship of Fools” served as a calming second set cooldown, pumping the breaks on the first half of the set that had seen “Sugar Magnolia” kick off a train of jams through “Scarlet Begonias” and into “Man Smart, Woman Smarter”, before pulling into station at the tender “Ship of Fools”.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux said of the performance,
From Mars Hotel, Ship Of Fools was played live more than 200 times, and was a consistent part of the repertoire since its debut in 1974. This was the second year in a row it was played at Rich Stadium, after the previous year’s performance on 7/4/89.
