The latest installment in the Grateful Dead‘s All The Years Live archive video series is available now on the band’s YouTube page. This entry highlights the Dead’s performance of “We Can Run” from Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, NC on July 10th, 1990.
Brent Mydland‘s enduring environmental ode appeared—as it so often did—in the first set. The song’s lyrical intensity was propelled all the further by the keyboardist’s powerful vocal performances. Jerry Garcia carves out his place in the song as well, adding flourishes that serve as a light foil to Mydland’s impassioned singing.
Grateful Dead archivist and legacy manager David Lemieux notes in the video’s description,
Brent’s environmental anthem was a big part of the Grateful Dead’s setlists for a year and half, and was one of Brent’s four contributions to the Dead’s final studio album, Built To Last, released on Halloween 1989. More than 30 years later, We Can Run still resonates and reflects the climate change that planet Earth is experiencing now. This version was recorded live just two weeks before Brent’s passing.
