Greensky Bluegrass returned on Friday with “Grow Together”, the second single off the band’s forthcoming album, Stress Dreams. The jamgrass outfit’s new studio album is out on January 21st via Thirty Tigers.

The sprawling, seven-minute single finds’ Paul Hoffman‘s poignant lyricism leading the way. The opening phrase, “No matter how far we’ve come, still the same thing on my mind/That we can grow old together, if we can find the time,” becomes a mantra as family home movies of the band flash onscreen. The familial nature of the song goes even deeper, as Hoffman told The Boot, who premiered the track on Thursday.

“I was busy preparing to be a father and I wrote this with my five-week-old daughter at my feet. She laid there and listened, so content,” Hoffman said. “I hoped this was the first of many experiences like this for her and I. I reflected on the amazing gift her mother had given me and ‘Grow Together’ just fell out of my heart. It’s a testament to a new chapter in my life and a love song for the woman who made me a father.”

The song also emerges as a post-lockdown anthem, as Greensky Bluegrass looks to “Grow Together” as a band along with their families and audience. Beyond the lyricism, the expansive instrumentation provides a strong foothold for live improvisation, with Anders Beck delivering a soaring electric dobro solo. Hoffman contends that the live energy of the song was inherent from the moment the band laid it down in the studio.

“In Vermont, we jumped right in with this song. I wanted to sing it live to feel the power of the band and the emotions of the song,” Hoffman said. “It was so moving. My heart was racing and I was almost too moved to deliver lines like, ‘When I’m looking back it’s so clear now what I’ve lacked.’ Some songs have their own studio power, and for me, this will always be one of the most memorable.”
