Greensky Bluegrass closed out a two-night run at Roaring Camp Meadows in Felton, CA on Friday. The show saw, amongst other things, the band’s debut of 1963 R&B classic “Sunny” by Bobby Hebb.
Opening up with “Past My Prime”, things got underway with the early California show beginning just after 5 p.m. The band segued into its first-ever take on “Sunny” before rattling off “Bone Digger” and “Room Without a Roof” to carry on the first set. “How Mountain Girls Can Love” delivered some more traditional bluegrass ahead of “Stress Dreams” and Bob Marley‘s “Stop That Train”, a song often covered by Jerry Garcia, whose birthday was this past weekend. After “While Waiting”, the first set came to a close with an incendiary “Kerosene”.
Set two saw Greensky “Do It Alone” followed by staying “In Control” on “A Letter to Seymour” and asking the fan-favorite question, “Who Is Frederico?”. The marathon second set rolled right on through “Run or Die”, I’m Still Here”, “Reverend” and “‘Fa Sho, Uh Huh” before GSBG got into a “Broke Mountain Breakdown”.
The song—whose origins are as long and winding as the mountains themselves—ultimately lead to Pink Floyd‘s “Time” and “Breathe (Reprise)” before a reprisal of “Broke Mountain Breakdown” closed the second frame.
Upon returning to the stage, Greensky offered a simple “The Four” before what could be construed as another Jerry Garcia homage with Norton Buffalo‘s “Ain’t No Bread In The Breadbox” closed the show.
