West Coast funk supergroup The Greyboy Allstars treated fans to two nights of immaculate grooves at Brooklyn Bowl on April 7th and 8th. Having formed as DJ Greyboy‘s backing band in 1993, the lineup of Karl Denson (saxophone, flute, vocals), Robert Walter (keyboards, organ), Elgin Park (guitar, vocals), Aaron Redfield (drums), and Chris Stillwell (bass) has taken on new life as a powerhouse of mostly instrumental jazz-funk.
Fresh off their 2022 release, Get A Job: Music from the Original Broadcast Series Soul Dream, The Greyboy Allstars delivered two hard-grooving sets each night at Brooklyn Bowl, with setlists featuring a mix of songs off their new album, which consists of all covers, in addition to original tunes and other covers. The night saw guitarist Elgin Park and bassist Chris Stillwell temporarily swap instruments, and de facto frontman Karl Denson deftly switched between sax and flute throughout the night, often mid-song, providing vocals, percussion, and commentary between compositions.
The Greyboy Allstars’ Get a Job Tour continues with a string of West Coast dates, including shows at Venice West in Venice, CA April 21st; Boulder Theater in Boulder, CO April 22nd; Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver, CO April 23rd; and Tipitina’s in New Orleans, LA April 30th.
