The Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage concert series kicked off its 2022 season on Saturday with a free Opening Night performance by jazz-funk legend Herbie Hancock at the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park curated in partnership with Blue Note Jazz Festival. The event also featured a supporting set by trumpeter Keyon Harrold and a DJ set by Pete Rock.

Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage will continue throughout the summer months with free events in parks around New York City including concerts by Waxahatchee with Swearin’, Ohmme, and Delphine Blue (DJ set); Cory Henry with Rustam Ospanoff (DJ set), Black Midi with Sal Valentinetti and Alisa Ali (DJ set) hosted by Sarah Squirm; Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis; and many more. For the second year in a row, Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem will host a screening of Questlove‘s Oscar and Grammy-winning documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) on June 17th, commemorating Juneteenth at the site of The Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969.

As per tradition, SummerStage will also produce a wide variety of benefit concerts in Central Park that help finance the array of free programming. Upcoming benefit shows include Trombone Shorty’s Voodoo Threauxdown with Tank and the Bangas, Big Freedia, Cyril Neville, George Porter Jr. and Dumpstaphunk, and The Soul Rebels; George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic with Dopapod and Pimps of Joytime; Belle & Sebastian with Los Bitchos; Lawrence and MisterWives with Winnetka Bowling League; Michael Franti & Spearhead; Barenaked Ladies with Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket; Lucy Dacus; Parcels; Sons of Kemet; Sharon Van Etten with Angel Olsen and Julien Baker; The Decemberists; Rainbow Kitten Surprise; and many more.
