On Tuesday night, acclaimed jazz musicians Herbie Hancock and Kamasi Washington opened up their 2019 co-headlining tour with a performance at Vienna, VA’s Wolf Trap. Although Hancock and Washington are part of different jazz generations, the pairing of the two musicians is a perfect fit for a coast-to-coast summer rendezvous.
Washington offered up the first performance of the evening, running through a plethora of material dating back to his sprawling 2015 debut triple album, The Epic. Hancock and his band—comprised of bassist James Genus, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, guitarist Lionel Loueke, and multi-instrumentalist Terrace Martin—handled the second slot of the co-bill, which saw Herbie welcome Washington at the very end of his performance for an encore rendition of “Chameleon”. Hancock traded off electric keytar licks with Washington, backed by Herbie’s all-star band.
