On Wednesday night, acclaimed jazz musicians Herbie Hancock and Kamasi Washington continued their 2019 co-headlining tour with a performance at Denver, CO’s Mission Ballroom. Although Hancock and Washington are part of different jazz generations, the pairing of the two musicians is a perfect fit for a coast-to-coast summer rendezvous.

Washington offered up the first performance of the evening, running through a plethora of material dating back to his sprawling 2015 debut triple album, The Epic. For a segment of his performance, Kamasi welcomed up his father, Rickey Washington, to lend an added assist on the flute.

Hancock and his band—comprised of bassist James Genus, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, guitarist Lionel Loueke, and multi-instrumentalist Terrace Martin—handled the second slot of the co-bill, which saw Herbie welcome Kamasi and his father at the very end of his performance for an encore rendition of “Chameleon”. Hancock traded off dazzling keytar licks with Kamasi and Rickey, backed by his all-star band.
