Herbie Hancock has been around for a very long time, but his taste in music is still as hip and eclectic as they come. In a lengthy new interview with the San Diego Union-Tribune, Hancock reveals that he has been working with a slew of extremely exciting guests for his forthcoming LP. In addition to fellow jazz heavyweight and former Miles Davis Quintet bandmate Wayne Shorter, the as-of-yet untitled project will feature contributions from critically acclaimed contemporary artists like Kendrick LamarCommonSnoop DoggFlying LotusThundercatKamasi Washington, and more. The multi-talented and highly regarded Terrace Martin is producing the album.

As Hancock explains to the Union-Tribune:

I’m learning a lot from the young people I’m working with … because they built the new structures, social media and that whole arena, and that affects how you get things out in front of the public to let them know you’re working on something.

So I’m still learning, which I’m very happy about. I never want to stop learning. And I’m not even thinking in terms of: “I’ll do this record, get it out there, promote it, do some concerts, and then at some point I’ll work on the next record.” These days, you can put out two tracks, then something a little later that’s connected to the other two. So where you draw the line is up to the artist. It’s a new day.

We can’t wait to hear what Herbie and his talented cast of collaborators are cooking up! Herbie Hancock is currently in the midst of a brief run of west coast shows. You can catch him tomorrow night, 3/6, in Tucson, AZ and the following night, 3/7, in San Diego.
