On Tuesday night, renowned pianist Holly Bowling continued her fall tour with a stop at Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta, Georgia. Bowling has become a beloved figure of the jam community, gaining widespread recognition that catapulted her onto the radar a few years back for her solo piano reimaginings of Phish and Grateful Dead jams. During her show last night, the classically trained pianist captivated her Atlanta audience with a two-set show that ran down her usual covers of well-loved in addition to offering the debut of a brand-new original, “Proxima B”.

Opening the show with the upbeat Grateful Dead classic, “China Cat Sunflower”, Bowling took her time in transition the song through to “Billy Breathes”, the title track of Phish’s 1996 release. After a stirring rendition of the Dead’s “Bird Song”, the pianist started in on an “It’s Ice” sandwich. During “It’s Ice”, Bowling gave a nod to Atlanta, sandwiching her own rendition of Phish’s accoladed 25-plus-minute Atlanta “Tweezer” jam on August 1st, 2015 within the tune, marking the first time she’s reimagined the Phish jam in 85 shows. From there, Bowling debuted her new tune, “Proxima B”, before a combo of “AC/DC Bag” into the set-closing “I Know You Rider”, with the set opener and closer referencing the Grateful Dead’s frequent pairing, “China > Rider”.

For set two, Bowling opened things up with the Grateful Dead’s “Lost Sailor” before using the tune as a springboard into Phish’s “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing” and “Dirt”, with Bowling again working references into “China > Rider” across the latter two numbers. The five-song second set closed out with the Dead’s “Estimated Prophet” and “Saint Of Circumstance,” before Bowling returned with an encore of Duane Allman’s “Little Martha” and a show-closing interpretation of “Squirming Coil”.
